I have been photographing flowering prairie plants monthly for several months, so I went out to the Texas City Prairie Preserve this morning. I wander around looking to see what was blooming and found number of blooming plants, like Bitterweed, Blue Mistflower, Sharp Gayfeather, Fall Aster, Goldenrod, and Baccharis. Many of the plants have gone to seed.
This year Swamp Sunflower (Helianthus angustifolius) is also know as Slender-leaved Sunflower. This plant is present in much greater numbers than I have seen in previous years and there are many large patches blooming on the prairie this year. I spent some time this morning attempting to capture a nice set of photos of this plant.
For those of you that may be interested, I feel, this plant would work very well as a late season flowering plant for your yard or pollinator garden. They grow to from about 1 foot to 3 feet tall and are good nectar plants, probably good for migrating Monarchs.
